Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine Training Program at Saint Joseph Hospital. We hope the information contained in these web pages help to answer any questions you might have about our program. Our community-based program provides an excellent environment, which fosters the growth and development of young physicians and prepares them for a successful and rewarding future.
We offer a strong clinical experience that is complemented by a well-structured didactic lecture series. Our case-based morning reports moderated by the Chief Residents continue to receive very high praise from graduates of our program and are attended by many faculty members. The state-of-the-art simulation laboratory and conference center, the Bernard Gordon Skill Lab and Education Resource Center, is equipped with simulation models used to safely teach the procedural skills required of an internist. Our residents are exposed to the care of the medically underserved, through the weekly continuity clinic sessions at the Labouré Clinic and CommunityHealth, a free clinic located on the west side of Chicago.
Residents are welcome additions to many hospital committees, providing a voice in hospital operations, as well as gaining a first hand exposure to other aspects of healthcare. In addition to online library resources, texts and journal subscriptions, our residents have access to other educational resources such as Up-To-Date. These serve as an excellent resource for the enhancement of patient care and resident education. Residents rotating in our critical care units not only have the benefit of a robust educational program led by our intensivists and cardiologists, but also have the back-up of a critical care team that can monitor patients remotely.
Another unique feature of our training program is a Behavioral Sciences curriculum that includes lectures, small group sessions, retreats and one-on-one sessions to help further the development of our residents as professionals and as effective communicators.
Members of our graduating classes have had tremendous success on the ABIM certifying examinations as well as in securing practice positions and competitive fellowships. Employers who have hired our graduates comment that they are well prepared for the practice of clinical medicine and are comfortable assuming the role of practicing physicians.
Our location on the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan in Chicago is probably one of our best kept secrets. The city offers a rich mix of culture, world-class architecture, sports and fine dining. There is something here for everyone.
We are dedicated to our residents and strive to educate them in a setting that promotes their educational, professional and personal development. We believe you will appreciate the supportive environment we have created and look forward to meeting you.
